Paediatric animation

These animations are designed to help visualise "what's happening" when several interactive movements are taking place, often all at once and in many cases hidden from sight.

The active cycle of breathing technique (ACBT) is a three-stage process for clearing sputum whilst Breathing dynamics shows how rib movement creates the conditions for breathing and breathing and gas transfer introduces the alveoli

Physiology: memory test (2)

Without looking first, can you explain what what is happening below, following the numbers? Hover over the numbers to check your answers! (answers are also provided below, in a form that can be printed out if needed)

  Answers

1: Low tone (weak nerve signals);
2: inside the child's knee are muscles containing nerves;
3: these Sensory nerves feel and send signals to the brain;
4: however the signal is very weak so the sensory brain cannot pass the signal on to the motor brain properly;
5: as a result the Motor nerve cannot transmit;
6: so the muscle goes to sleep because it feels no message coming from the brain

Supported hip movement

Exercise: support child with hands on the hips and use the movement of the ball to stimulate neuromuscular activity in spine, sacrum and legs

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may vary this movement on the patient with... and (active area for discussion) perhaps consider these elements...

Decreasing tone

The exercise: once child is balanced in a leaning position, gently roll ball to stimulate and release muscular tension in spine and legs

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may vary this movement on the patient with... and (active area for discussion) perhaps consider these elements...

Shoulder strengthening

The exercise: using a short stick, assist the child to raise both arms together as high as comfortably possible. Keep arm movement up and down with their position as straight as possible

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may want to vary this movement with... and (active area for discussion) perhaps consider these elements...

Standing up assistance

The exercise: whilst the child attempts to stand from a kneeling position, support the hips with one hand and back with other. if child the is confident and balanced, then continue to full standing position

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may want to vary this movement with... and (active area for discussion) perhaps consider these elements...

Assisting muscle tone

The exercise: gentle pulling aid routine, to help stiffness

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may want to vary this movement with... and (active area for discussion) perhaps consider these elements...

More on this subject here...

Neck strengthening

The exercise: introduce something curious to help the child gently raise their head, which will stimulate relevant neck muscles

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may vary this movement on the patient with... and (active area for discussion) perhaps consider these elements...

More on this subject here...

Walking frame balance

The exercise: encourage the child to raise an arm whilst moving the walking frame back and fore, to establish confidence in their balance and stimulate strength in leg muscles

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may vary this movement on the patient with...

More on this subject here...

Decreasing tone stretch

The exercise: to relieve high tone in the arm, support the elbow with one hand whilst fully stretching the contracted arm muscles with the other

Extra notes on the exercise

(physio) you may vary this movement on the patient with...
